Behaviour in a bottom trawl: moving forward to limit catches of Atlantic cod

چکیده

Abstract The iconic Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua Linnaeus, 1758) has inspired a substantial body of fishing-gear research across its geographical range, with recent efforts predominately to reduce catches this species in fisheries where their populations are fragile. Despite status and long history study compared other species, our understanding behaviour during the capture process bottom trawl remains frustratingly limited. Much is derived indirectly through catch results, supported limited extent by direct observations situ or held laboratories. In paper, we describe four challenges directions that consider critical advance knowledge behaviour, ultimately, improve selectivity trawls cod. These include resurrection behavioural directly observe measure reaction sensory capabilities, improved interpretation response trawl. It also view progress limiting should emphasize stimulating avoidance at mouth an approaching trawl, rather than retrospectively attempting do so after they have entered mouth.

Decision Support to Sustainable Management of Bottom Trawl Fleet

A decision support concept (DSC) for sustainable management of the bottom trawl fleet was created in line with ecosystem-based management. It is based on principles that integrate ecological, social and techno-economic aspects of trawl fisheries in a multicriteria analysis approach. For the sake of greater transparency and improved stakeholder participation, elements of the proposed multicriter...

Reliability of trawl surveys on cod in Norwegian fjords

According to ICES, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, populations of coastal cod (CC) in Norway north of 628N have been declining since 1994. The estimates are based on analytical assessment in which the most recent estimates are tuned with survey information. We evaluate the quality of bottom-trawl surveys conducted in four North Norwegian fjords during autumn of the yea...

Estimating catches with automatic identification system (AIS) data: a case study of single otter trawl in Zhoushan fishing ground, China

The sailing tracks of single otter trawl vessels were simulated using cubic hermite spline (cHs) interpolation method based on the automatic identification system (AIS) data of 6 sampled vessels that were fishing in the Zhoushan fishing grounds after the close of the fishing season from September 2012 to January 2013.  The vessels’ status (i.e. whether the vessels were fishing or not) were dete...

A genomic island linked to ecotype divergence in Atlantic cod.

The genomic architecture underlying ecological divergence and ecological speciation with gene flow is still largely unknown for most organisms. One central question is whether divergence is genome-wide or localized in 'genomic mosaics' during early stages when gene flow is still pronounced. Empirical work has so far been limited, and the relative impacts of gene flow and natural selection on ge...
